Today, were going to talk about the four must dos to fulfill your purpose. Ever since I did my first podcast titled, The First Thing To Do When You Want to Change Careers, Ive been getting messages via social media and directly from people commenting they feel have clarity on what they want to do, but In that (first) episode, we talked about finding your purpose (and writing your headline). If you havent had a chance to listen to that podcast, it might be helpful to go to it or revisit it. We talked about gaining clarity regarding what you want out of life and what you want to offer this world. A lot of the comments I got from people mentioned they have clarity regarding what they want to do, but cant seem to fulfill it. They cant seem to get it to work! I read, âI feel like I know how, but Im not quite sure what Im not doing. I thought as I was remarking back to these listeners and readers there are four (must doâs) that absolutely have to be done in order to truly fulfill your purpose. Before we dive in, Iâm going to assume you know what it is you want to offer this world. (If not, see the first podcast for help.) Lets just say you have that clarity. Most people, once they realize that clarity, immediately want to go into the âhow.â How am I going to make this happen? SACRIFICE [First things first. You need to be willing to give upâ"a lot.] While thatâs a step I would recommend, it isnât the place I would start. The place Iâd start is with sacrifice. Trust me when I tell you, determining how youll fulfill your purpose will be much easier than dealing with what youre going to need to give up. Do you want it badly enough youâre willing to sacrifice for it? Before you concern yourself with how youre going to get it done, take stock. If youâre unwilling to sacrifice in order to overcome the obstacles and all youâll need to learn and all youâll need to do to become proficient, youre never going to make it happen. This is the first and probably most common issue that derails anybody from achieving anything. Whether thatâs living their purpose or achieving their goals. So, the first thing you need to do is make sure youre not only clear regarding what youll sacrifice, but also actually follow through and sacrifice it. This could be a hobby, time with your friends, or dinners out. This could be whatever you do to enjoy life. Maybe, even what you think are ânecessities.â In order to do something big with yourself, youre going to have to give up big things. You are bigger than you can imagine. What you have to offer this world is bigger than you can imagine. It really is. Hereâs something youâll need to accept. Of all the people in your life you touch or make a profound impact onâ¦most of them will never even let you know you made a great impact on their life. Trust me when I tell you, the things youre doing, whatever they are, however innocuous you think they are, they are impacting people. You might find out months later or years later. You may never find out. But, you have to trust that what youre doing is worth it and you need to be willing to sacrifice in order to give it to the world. I think about what I sacrifice in my life to make sure you can get my message. Itâs worth it to me. LEARN [You never stop being a student.] The second must do is understanding and accepting the fact you are going to need to learn things you dont know. Not only are you going to have to learn things you dont know, youâll also have to keep learning new ways to do things you already know how to do! Are you willing to learn and adjust? Heres what happens. You decide [your purpose] and what you want to offer the world. You decide what youre going to accomplish. You decide your goals. Then you start learning and become proficient. Then youre cruising along and start to see youre really contributing value to the world. Then as soon as you get proficientâ¦bang! The world changes. Itâs bad enough there are obstacles simply to learn what you need to learn. Itâs bad enough people arent going to cooperate and lifes not going to cooperate. On top of that, the world is going to change. Thats a given. Its going to evolve. Its going to present new ways for you to deliver whatever it is youre delivering and youre going to need to make changes. Thats a given. The only thing that isnt a given is what youre going to do about it. Heres a great acid test. Itâs something I ask myself before I undertake something because I want to give it my best. Theres a huge difference between a passing interest and a deep desire to do something, accomplish something, or be part of something. What I do before undertake itâ"to know whether or not I will take it to fulfillmentâ"is ask myself, Am I willing to struggle when it gets hard? Will I be okay with that? Will I deal with the struggles, whether theyre daily, monthly, or yearly? If youâre willing to struggle, I promise you there is a deep desire because thats the huge difference. People have lots of interests and its great when all is going well. But, as soon as something goes wrong, they stop. They throw in the towel. They give up. They let go. Sure, they were interested (at one point), but they didnt have a deep desire. Heres a great example. I love writing. I wish I could just write everything, shoot it out into the world. Have you read it and get those great takeaways. No. The world says, Hang on. People want to see things differently. They [actually] want to see it on video. They want it coming through their ear buds. They dont have time to read. They want to listen while theyre driving. All of these new inventions and technologies weve created are wonderful. They allow us to meet and access more people. But, this also means I have to create products and messages that use different mediums. That requires extra work. Thatâs more painful, BUT I feel like what I have to share with you is important. Youâre important to me. Getting this message to you is important to me! Whether thereâs only one of you listening or a hundred or a thousand or a hundred thousand. I think this message is important. I hope you learn something from it. If Im able to touch one person, Im going to go to great lengths to transfer my message. Hopefully that persons life will be changed. You are going to need to think about this. It matters. BELIEVE [You must believe in yourself no matter what.] The third must do comes even when you have clarity, ever though you struggle, and even though youâre becoming proficient. It asks, âWill you continually believe in yourself no matter what? Will succeed no matter what it takes, no matter what the world throws at you, no matter the challenges you encounter. Do you believe? Do you trust your own ability to figure it out? Will you overcome those obstacles?â Theres a great quote, Im sure many of you have heard. No truer words have ever been spoken than the ones by Henry Ford who said, Whether you think you can or you cant, youre right. It doesnt matter how proficient you are or how much skill you have. If you dont believe in your ability to make it happen, you wont. Thats number three. Will you believe in yourself no matter what? FOCUS [With a vision, your why, and the how, youâll be focused.] The fourth must do really troubles people, especially in our world today and the speed at which everything changes. You have so much coming at you through the television, through the radio, through the Internet, through the social sites. There are constant distractions. Will you remain focused because your love for fulfilling that purpose is greater than anything else that enters your life? You have clarity and are willing to learn. You will overcome the challenges. But, as those daily surprises and opportunities surface, will you be able to remain focused? Will you remember why you got into this in the first place? Can you remove the noise? You can try to swat away the obstacles, but there are actually three [reasons] you stay focused. You have strategy and you have a vision. [If you understand your why and you understand your purpose, I assume you have that.] The âwhyâ you want to make that happen is the second key ingredient. Many times people forget their why. It makes them lose focus. The how. Do you have a map? If you have a map, the map will help you weather the storm. Focus is really about staying true to all youve already developed. What is your purpose? Why is that important to you? How will you achieve it? Youve already developed this. By the time you encounter these focal distractions, you have all the tools necessary to overcome them. Even so, common sense does not mean common practice. In this case, this wasnt all common sense, but there was sense to what you did and what you put together and why you put it together and the reasons you got engaged in whatever it was in the first place. Once you have clarity around your why and what you want to offer the world and how you want to give it to them, it comes down to being able to sacrifice those things that might enjoyments or ânecessitiesâ or whatever. But, you need to be willing to give those up. Are you willing to learn and continually learn whatever it is you dont know? Then, once you do know it, are you willing to adjust to better ways of doing it? Will you believe in yourself no matter what? Will you stay focused? Recruiting Introverts Why You Might Be Losing Your Best Candidates A few years ago, I watched New York Times best-selling author Susan Cainâs TED Talk on âThe Power of Introvertsâ and had one of those rare moments in life where everything suddenly made sense. Waitwhat? Im completely normal and just an introvert? Itâs hard to believe I never knew this about myself. The signs were always there: I love to connect 1:1 or in small groups, but dread networking events and ice breakers (just writing those two words raised my blood pressure). I play a lot of video games (alone). I prefer to stay behind-the-scenes and out of the spotlight. And most telling, I recharge by spending time alone. I just needed a little education to understand what all of these things meant. After watching Susanâs TED Talk and reading many subsequent articles about this topic, I am clearly not the only person who felt their introverted tendencies meant something was wrong with them. This is because our worlds (and our workplaces) are largely designed around those who need and want a lot of social interaction. Our recruiting processes and decisions also favor extroverts, and itâs not hard to see why. Extroverts are more expressive and boisterous and easily form connections with others. And our processes are narrowly tailored towards looking at people through the lens of how well they express themselves verbally under time pressure. Given that introverts generally prefer time to think before speaking, this can present quite a disadvantage. Yet, one-third to half of the population are introverts, and according to many studies, teams perform best when there is a balance of both introverted and extroverted members. In addition, whether a leader is introverted or extroverted can impact leadership effectiveness depending upon the type of team thatâs being led. The following quote from a Harvard Business Review article written by Francesca Gino, professor at Harvard Business School, says it best: Team leaders who are extroverted can be highly effective leaders when the members of their team are dutiful followers looking for guidance from above. As someone who has worked in recruiting and talent management for 16 years, Iâve thought a lot about the ways to fix this issue. 1. Commit to learning about introverts We are in the people business. Itâs imperative that we not only understand the job and company weâre selling but also the complex nuances of the people we are recruiting. For instance, did you know that being introverted is not the same as being shy? Both introverts and extroverts are shy in equal numbers. Adjust the way you interview candidates We spend a lot of time during the interview process asking our candidates impromptu questions either on the phone or in person under time pressure. While this may be helpful in understanding how well a candidate may think on their feet, it really only reflects of one of many personality traits that can help determine whether they are a good fit for the job. What about assessing how well a candidate prepares for meetings or how well they can take several pieces of information and clearly articulate their perspective after some thought? Or, how well a candidate expresses themselves in writing? These are often strengths that introverts bring to the table that are overlooked in the interview process. Below are a few tips to help an introvert show off their strengths in the interview process and lead to better, more informed hiring decisions: Before an in-person interview, send some of the questions to the candidate in advance. This helps level the playing field between those who prefer to process before responding (introvert) and those who donât (extrovert). Send some questions in writing and ask for a written response. This shows how well a candidate expresses themselves in writing vs. just verbally. Some introverts are much better at articulating thoughts and expressing personality in writing. Ask a candidate to do some research on a topic and do a short presentation on it. Introverts often donât love to talk about themselves but can really shine when talking about a topic they are passionate about. This is where people come out for the very reason to meet people, share ideas and in a way sell themselves. At a networking event, you are showcasing yourself, your expertise and ultimately your personal brand. There is plenty of networking advice out there, I have come up with three things that have worked well for me over the years and here goes: 1. Listen and then ask the right questions The golden rule at a networking event, or any other business interaction for that matter is to listen more than you talk. This is classic sales stuff that everyone should know. If you think about the really successful people in your life, are they very chatter boxes or are they listeners? I would think the latter. Do they ask the right questions? I would think they probably do. You will only reach success when you understand what other people really want. Sometimes you will get people asking for your services but not knowing exactly why. This is your job to listen and make sure they know their reasons for it and what they are trying to achieve. If you think about it, what salesperson would you buy a camera from; the one talking at you and selling feature after feature, or the other one asking what you are going to use it for? Being an active listener and asking the right questions sounds like simple stuff but it can be harder to actually do. Active listening takes effort but when you do it the right questions will pop up and the payback is there. 2. Partner up with the competition You will inevitably bump into people doing similar things to you at networking events. Instead of the Mexican stand-off which sometimes happens, try to find out where there can be synergies between the two of you. Lets say that you sell ice-cream for instance and you get talking to another ice-cream salesperson. Do you work the same location? Do you sell the same flavors? Do your customers have the same demographic? Same pricing? Probably not on most of these questions. This means you can share information on suppliers, discuss general market conditions and you can even set up a joint venture and seek global ice-cream domination. If you are a solo-preneur, your success will depend on fitting into an eco system of other consultants and freelancers. Make yourself useful to them and help out as much as possible; your efforts are always appreciated and you will be repaid at some stage. You will invariably bump into and sometimes lock horns with the competition at client sites. The networking event provides a safe environment where you can you can practise interaction with the competition without causing too much damage in front of a customer. 3. Hunters vs. farmers We have all been there. You get chatting to someone with a big smile from ear to ear. They are hyper friendly and rather quickly state their business while scanning the room for their next prey. They hand over their business card and expect you to reciprocate; they then make an excuse and move on to the next person. This person will go home that night and count up the number of cards they got and more crucially, how many of their own cards they handed out. These people are called hunters, meaning they are only interested in a quick chat and exchanging cards. Study after study shows that this approach doesnt work but some folks do it as handing out cards feels like an achievement. Farmers on the other hand, understand the value of knowing, liking and trusting people. They know that business relationships grow over time and they are prepared to bide their time. They say that all you need is twenty people in your network if you nurture it well. These twenty people may take many networking events to get right but the farmer knows that having a real connection with one person is much stronger than shallow chats with hundreds. In practical terms, when you start out on the networking circuit its probably difficult to know whos who. When you see the same faces a few weeks in a row youll know who the farmers are and where you need to put your energy. The fact that the farmers are laid back, very comfortable with networking and genuinely interested in people certainly will certainly help you on the way.
