8 quotations on leadership from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
8 quotations on leadership from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.8 quotations on leadership from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.Since the national holiday was officially commemorated in 1986, every third Monday in January is dedicated to honoring the civil rights legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The revolutionary activist and minister dedicated his life to the service of furthering racial equality and justice, organizing bus boycotts in Alabama early in his career. Given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, Dr. King grew to be one of the most visible spokespersons of the civil rights movement until he was assassinated at age 39 years old in 1968.Frequently quoted by leaders everywhere today for inspiration, Dr. Kings advice is as relevant and as urgent now as it was when he first gave it decades ago.Heres a list of Dr. Kings best quotes on how we can be better leaders in our personal and professional lives. On standing up for your beliefsThe ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others, Dr. King said in his 1963 book Strength to Love, a published collection of sermons that he started drafting from his jail cell after being arrested for holding a prayer vigil outside Albany City Hall in Georgia. On compassionTrue compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring, Dr. King told a New York City church audience in his 1967 Beyond Vietnam address, which he gave a year to the day before he was assassinated. On materialismWe must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, militarism and economic exploitation are incap able of being conquered, Dr. King said in his 1967 speech on why he was opposed to the Vietnam War.On ambitionWe all have the drum major instinct. We all want to be important, to surpass others, to achieve distinction, to lead the parade, Dr. Kingsaid in his address to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference on August 16, 1967. And the great issue of life is to harness the drum major instinct. It is a good instinct if you dont distort it and pervert it. Dont give it up. Keep feeling the need for being important. Keep feeling the need for being first. But I want you to be the first in love. I want you to be the first in moral excellence. I want you to be the first in generosity. On educationEducation must also train one for quick, resolute and effective thinking. To think incisively and to think for ones self is very difficult. We are prone to let our mental life become invaded by legions of half truths, prejudices, and propaganda, a young King wrote in 1947 in his campus newspap er the MaroonTiger. We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. On loveI am convinced that love is the most durable power in the world. It is not an expression of impractical idealism but of practical realism. Far from being the pious injunction of a Utopian dreamer, love is an absolute necessity for the survival of our civilization. To return hate for hate does nothing but intensify the existence of evil in the universe, Dr. King answered when asked his advice on living in a 1957 column. On justiceInjustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly, Dr. King wrote in his1963Letter from Birmingham Jail.On legacyI believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumpha nt, Dr. King said in his 1964 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech

5 Tips for Making Your Information Shine
5 Tips for Making Your Information Shine5 Tips for Making Your Information Shine5 Tips for Making Your Information ShineUnsure of what employers are looking for in a stand-out resume? Weve got you covered. TWEETAre you in a position of creating a new resume and dont know where to start? Have you always been able to find new employment opportunities through referrals? Has it been 10, 20, or even 30 years since your last resume rechnungsprfung? If you fit into any of these categories, you may be wondering what information is needed and how to begin the process of looking for your dream job.Todays resumes have changed from 10 years ago, 5 years ago, and even 1 year ago. Rather than write your resume in the same old format and with the same tired information, consider the five tips below before you get started. Learn what todays employers are seeking, how being concise is key, and why consistency may enhance your professionalism. In fact, if you follow these tips, you will already be ahe ad of the rest of the job seekers scrambling to put together a resume for your dream jobTip 1 Get Organized.Keep a folder, drawer, hard copy, and/or electronic copy of important documents. Make a list of your previous employers, official job titles, dates of employment, and job duties. Be sure you know official names of schools, degrees, and dates of graduation. Write down your skills, abilities, and qualifications.Tip 2 Chronological Resume? From most recent to oldest, it shows the order of education and employment. This is good when you have no periods without work, not many job changes, and you have worked in the same sector. It is an easy-to-understand format and illustrates stability. However, this schrift of resume may emphasize age too much and it may draw attention to gaps in work history.Tip 2 (continued) Functional Resume? A functional resume shows achievements and abilities, with little emphasis on dates. This type of resume works well when you have changed jobs often, if you have just graduated, or if you are looking to work in a different sector. A functional resume shows capacities and strengths, while illustrating the abilities specific to a desired position. However, it also limits the description of each position.Tip 3 Lose the Objective. What is your objective? TO GET A JOB Previously, job seekers would list the type of job they were seeking, rather than thinking of the employers needs. Instead of listing a boring objective, take the time to craft a career summary. This may be a few sentences in length, but it provides more valuable information than the standard objective.Tip 4 Be Concise.Employers are busy and you need to catch their eye immediately. You will not be able to list everything you have done. Think of new ways to phrase tasks and achievements. Being concise will allow you to intersperse key words throughout your document, words that allow your information to get through the Applicant Tracking System (ATS). And, if you need to use t he thesaurus, then do it. To be effective, utilize phrases instead of complete sentences while using bullet points for clarity.Tip 5 Be Consistent.Consistency shows an attention to detail and organization. Use single space throughout each job description and double space between jobs and headings. Ensure the font you have selected is appropriate for your field and is easy to read. Utilize the same bullet style throughout the document and be sure to keep the tone of voice the same within each job description. While these arent all of the rules for writing an effective resume, its a great starting point.

There#8217;s a Belief Gap about the Wage Gap, Part 1
There8217s a Belief Gap about the Wage Gap, Part 1 There8217s a Belief Gap about the Wage Gap, Part 1 1) that a wage gap does leid exist at all,2) that if a wage gap does exist, it exists because of choices women make,3) if a wage gap exists that it is not our problem nor do we have to take any responsibility for it.So in the interest of further public education among the readers of this site (presumably folks involved in talent acquisition and potentially at least SOME women) lets talk about this. One of the reasons this is once again, coming to the forefront, is because Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, recently chose Paul Ryan as his running mate. Ryan, among other things, voted against the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay act, a law that makes it easier for women to challenge unequal pay.In the above linked Bloomberg op-ed, author Ramesh Ponnuru statesHeres the truth you wont hear The pay gap is exaggerated, discrimination doesnt drive it and its not clear that government c an eliminate it or should even try.He doesnt just discourage government from addressing the wage gap, he stresses with a 2005 and 2009 study, respectively, it doesnt exist and if it does, it is most certainly not the fault or responsibility of employers to make it rightThere is very little that individual employers can do about any of these issues. They cant make men do more housework, or pick majors for women. Nor can they reasonably be asked to adjust their salary schedules to make up for those choices.None of these arguments are new to women who have been trying not only to get the wage gap closed but now have to wage a double battle regarding the belief that such a thing exists. So what happens when you control for certain industries, having kids, full vs part-time and hours worked beyond full time (described in many economics studies as 35 hours per week or more)? Well, the wage gap still seems to exist, as shown in this 2010 GAO study, showing that female managers make 81% as much as their male counterparts, even when controlling (once again) for all of the above factors. One of the most common arguments against the existence of a wage gap based on discrimination, is that of women taking time out of the workforce to have children, care for their families and help with the housework (I cannot believe I even have to write that). But this too, proves to be a bit of a red herring, as even when childless women and men are compared, full-time working women are paid only 82 percent as much as full-time working men.I guess what Im saying here is that even when controlling for hours worked, childlessness, and job title, the gap still seems to exist.Okay fair enough, lets level that playing field, lets go back to when kids first start entering the workforce, when the discrepancy (among all socioeconomic, cultural and field of study data) seems to be the smallest (yay)Among all workers 25 years of age and older with some high school education, womens zentralwert wee kly wages total $388 compared to a total of $486 for men.A female MBA graduate is paid, on average, $4,600 less at her first job than a new male MBA graduate. What about the kiddo argument? If women are paid less because of their decision to have children (and that IS the rationale here) shouldnt men with children be paid less than their childless male counterparts? Well, noWomen are penalized for caregiving while men are not the 2003 GAO study found that women with children are paid about 2.5 percent less than women without children, while men with children enjoy an earnings boost of 2.1 percent, compared with men without children. In other words, working mothers pay a penalty while working fathers receive a bonus. While it would be irresponsible to continue to bandy about the stat that women earn 77 cents to every dollar men do, even when controlling for all of the above factors, the gap still exists, despite various claims to the contrary. One key toward making it better would be to acknowledge it is there and work toward bridging that gap, via leadership and negotiation training for both women and men and a better, deeper understanding of the biases that lead us to fight this claim so vociferously (seriously, check out some of the comments in these posts, articles and studies). In Part 2 of this series, well talk a little bit about other, less-explored arguments against the pay gaps existence, including negotiation tactics, work-life balance and high-risk high-reward theories. Read on for part two

Making the leap into a new career
Making the leap into a new career Making The Leap Into A New CareerPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie ChunIf you find yourself dreading the sound of the alarm, dragging yourself into work and wishing your day (and life) away, it might be time to think about changing jobs and maybe even totally transforming your career. The thought of making a major career change is daunting. Changing careers requires time, money, commitment and temporary sacrifice and with your mortgage, comfortable lifestyle and possibly little mouths to feed, it can all seem too hard, too late, and not worth the risk and effort. But moving into what you really want to do may be the best thing you could do for your wellbeing (and sanity). It can make the difference between going into a job you hate every day and feeling energised, motivated and impassioned by your work and life and avoiding a mid-life crisis while youre at it.Why change careers?Todays job market is a fluid one, with people changing job paths an av erage of three to five times during their lives. There are many reasons for people to change careers to get a better worklife balance, spend mora time with their family, follow their passion, be creative, get out of the rat-race, or make more money. Whatever the reason, there are many factors to weigh up you may have to accept a lower income at least temporarily, there is a certain amount of risk involved, and if it requires extra study you will have to pay for tuition and discipline yourself back into study mode. But these barriers are short-term and may be more about your own fears and assumptions than anything else. Many people contemplating a major career change fear that they may be too old and that no one will want to hire them but that is not necessarily the reality. Countless people have made successful career changes and most say it was the best thing they ever did their only regret being that they didnt do it sooner. Paul, 43, has already had several career transf ormations. He has worked in lumber trading, equity research, owned restaurants and most recently worked in corporate finance as a senior bank representative. He recently ditched it all, however, to start up his own business organising active holiday trips for adults at resorts throughout the world.

Interview and Negotiate Like a Lawyer
Interview and Negotiate Like a LawyerInterview and Negotiate Like a LawyerFollow these tips from lawyers to convince a hiring manager to offer you the job (and the salary) you want.Lawyers are trained not only to argue a position but persuade judges, juries and even adversaries to try to landsee things their ways. What can they teach job seekers about convincing a hiring manager to give them the job (and the money) theyre after?Ladders asked two attorneys, who coach other lawyers on how to interview and negotiate, for tips and tricks.Stephen E. Seckler, president of Seckler Legal Consulting in Newton, Mass., spent 15 years as a legal recruiter. He now runs his own business helping law firms manage their businesses more effectively.Veteran litigator Victoria Pynchon works as a mediator at ADR Services, helping other lawyers negotiate their way out of sticky conflicts.Dont burn the interviewerThe first thing to remember when taking advice from a lawyer on how to persuade and negotiate i s that your end goal is very different from a lawyers end game, Pynchon said. When lawyers argue, their goals are to win, not generally to meet the other party halfway or form a lasting bond, she said. You negotiate based on positions Im right, and youre wrong, and here are 10,000 reasons why youre wrong and I should get the biggest share of the pie, she said.Thats not a bad approach in the courtroom or across the negotiating table from an opponent after the lines have been drawn and the first shots fired in a dispute, she said. Its not so good in a job interview when what youre trying to do is establish a relationship, Seckler agreed.A salary negotiation isnt a conflict to be resolved, Pynchon said. There is a lot of push and pull, but what youre building is a relationship which you both hope will last a long time, not a scorched-earth business deal.Still, there is more back-and-forth in a good negotiation than most Americans are comfortable with.Pynchons other tips on negotiatingMak e the first offer. This goes counter to every guide to salary negotiations, but lawyers know that the part who names a number first sets the range for the discussion. Even if the other side disagrees, everything else is judged by how much higher or lower it is than that first number. Thats why they call it an anchor, Pynchon said. Its a cognitive issue we cant help it. Any number you introduce early in the negotiation will exert a pull on your negotiating partner.Dont negotiate with yourself. One of the things they did teach us at law school about negotiating is, dont bargain against yourself, she said. If you say you want $190,000 and the other person says thats well beyond the range, dont come back and say, How about $150,000? Wait for their response dont bargain yourself down.Justify and rationalize. Always give a reason, preferably a good one, for what youre asking for. If you dont have a good reason, give a bad one. In studies of human behavior, people offering a ridiculous re ason for asking a favor have nearly the same success rate as those offering logical reasons, Pynchon said. Offering no reason drops your success rate by more than a third. A good reason in this case would be a favorable comparison with what others in your position make, or a quantification of your contributions in your last job that demonstrate your real value.Be generous, long before you need to be. Reciprocity is one of the strongest human motivational factors, Pynchon said. Its why waiters put mints on the plate with your bill a little gift for which youll feel obligated.Hiring managers will feel the same way if they have a reason to feel obligated to you for the answers or support youve given members of his or her team through a social-networking site, for recommending job candidates or business opportunities anything that is clearly generous and selfless that affects hiring managers or someone who works with them.Be real.It has to be genuine, though, and you have to do it all the time, Pynchon said. People dont like it when youre clearly out to gain something. It makes them feel hustled.Make small concessions.Research shows that peoples satisfaction with the outcome of a negotiation is primarily tied to the number of concessions the other side makes, Pynchon said. tischset your expectations high and make small concessions, or offer to do more work for the same money, to make people happy. Youre trying to build something durable, so it helps if both people come out feeling as if theyve won something.

5 Questions with Stratasys CEO David Reis
5 Questions with Stratasys CEO David Reis 5 Questions with Stratasys CEO David Reis The global 3D printing market is expected to grow from $3 billion in 2014 to $21 billion by 2020, according to industry research. As 3D printing continues its exponential growth trajectory, what will be its future impact on industrial manufacturing? ASME.org caught up with David Reis, CEO of Stratasys, one of the key players in the 3D printing market, at a media event held in New York recently. Reis spoke about the rapid growth of 3D printing and how it enables cost and time savings in manufacturing including industries like industrial, aerospace, automotive, medical devices, and consumer products. Approximately 80% of fused deposition modeling (FDM) system owners in the U.S. are using the technology in augmented manufacturing for jigs, fixtures, and end-use parts application, said Reis in his presentation. Using 3D printing, organizations can realize 40-90% reductions in lead times and 70-90% cost savings, he added. Listen to the complete interview in the podcast: 3D Printing Advances to Industrial Manufacturing or read an abridged version below. David Reis, CEO, Stratasys Q1: 3D printing has been used for prototyping inmanufacturing for almost three decades. Which other areas of industrialmanufacturing is it being used in now? Reis: The last 30 years since the industry has established, our main focus was rapid prototyping, both for design and functional testing. In the last few years, we have been rapidly penetrating manufacturing in two areas. One of them is in the production of end-use parts, which is basically replacing traditional manufacturing processes, such as injection molding and machining with additive manufacturing. The other space we are penetrating is what we call augmented manufacturing, which is basically the manufacturing of tools that aid the manufacturing process. It could be guides, jigs, and fixtures, which assist people on the manufacturing floor to manufacture products. Q2: 3D printing has the potentialto disrupt several industries. Is there any application that you think still needs attention and could benefit from additive technology? Reis: I think there is a great opportunity in the medical space. Already today, there are some companies around the world, which are printing replacement parts for body like knees, hips. There are great opportunities, and nevertheless, it will require a lot of research and proof-of-concept in clinical validation of this area. Q3: There someconcerns about the environmental impact of 3D printed products. What's your opinion on that? Reis: I think the nature of additive manufacturing is that its more friendly to the environment than the traditional manufacturing processes. Most of the traditional manufacturing processes are subtractive, which means you take bulk of plastic and you subtract plastic from it to get the end part. In additive, you are building bottom up, so you are using only the plastic that you need. So by definition, you are using less plastic and the process will be consuming less energy. Q4: With so many products now being developedusing 3D printing, are standards required? Reis: The use of additive manufacturing to manufacture products is relatively small but rapidly growing. Most of the use of additive manufacturing today is in rapid prototyping and augmented manufacturing. The production of end-use parts in each industry will require compliance with current standards. A good example could be aerospace. If you want to replace a flying part in the airplane, you have to comply with standards in aerospace. Likewise in medical. Q5: What is the future outlook for 3D printing and do you think3D printers will someday becomeas common as themicrowave in homes? Reis: The outlook is great and the projection is that this industry is going to grow dramatically over the coming decade. The numbers are talking of growth from $3-3.5 billion in 2014 to $20 billion in 2020, which is only seven years from now. Whether I think 3D printing will become a household tool for manufacturing parts at home, I am a little bit more pessimistic about it. I think it will take more than a few years to get there, but we might be able to see it 20-30 years from now. Listen to the podcast: 3D Printing Advances to Industrial Manufacturing For Further Discussion Most of the use of additive manufacturing today is in rapid prototyping and augmented manufacturingDavid Reis, CEO, Stratasys

As with any job-related correspondence, its best to opt for a more formal language and tone - a cover letter is no place for XOXO, âCheers,â or even a casual take care as a closer. Cover Letter Closing Examples The following is a list of letter closing examples that are appropriate for cover letters and other employment-related correspondence, such as thank you notes and/or emails to schedule interviews or pass along references. SincerelySincerely yoursRegardsBestBest regardsWith best regardsKind regardsYours trulyMost sincerelyRespectfullyRespectfully yoursThank youThank you for your consideration Closings Not to Use A cover letter is a formal correspondence, so its important not to be too casual or friendly when writing it. Here are some letter closings that are fine to use when emailing or writing to a friend, but are not appropriate to use in a cover letter. AffectionatelyBest wishesCheersEagerly waiting for a responseFondlyWarm regardsWarmest regardsWarmlyTake careTake it easyHave a great dayHave a nice dayLoveSmilesXOXOYoursYours faithfullyAbbreviations (Thx or any other abbreviated word isnt appropriate)Any emoticon (no smiley faces)Sent from my phone (if your phone automatically includes it, you can remove it in the settings) How to Close the Letter Follow the closing with a comma. Then, on a new line, put your name. If youre sending an email, you can add your contact information below your name. For example: Best regards, Your NameYour LinkedIn Profile URLYour Email AddressYour Phone Number Whichever sign-off you choose, make sure always to capitalize its first letter. Set Up an Email Signature To simplify, you can set up an email signature that includes your contact information. An email signature will make it easy for correspondents to readily see how to get in touch and saves you the time of typing the information repeatedly. In your signature, include your LinkedIn profile URL to make it easy for your recipients to view your skills, accomplishments, educational background, and work history. Depending on your field, you may also want to include a link to your Twitter account; if you do so, make sure that your account is professional and appropriate for viewing by potential employers. Itâs a wise idea, when conducting a job search, to set up an email account (and accompanying address) dedicated solely to this search. Doing so will help to ensure that you donât miss emails from potential employers who might be interested in interviewing you. It also will allow you to provide a professional-sounding email address on your resume and cover letter; this email address should be comprised simply of your name (Ex. âJohn_T._Smithâ at gmail.com). Too often, job candidates use their personal email accounts to apply for jobs, often using âcuteâ email names such as âCrafty_catladyyahoo.comâ or OrcWarrior100gmail.com.â This casual practice often raises hiring managers, eyebrows, raising red flags about whether a candidate is a serious, qualified applicant for the job to which they are applying. Itâs better to err on the side of safety and separate your professional and personal email accounts. Find out how to set up a professional email signature, including formatting style and links to help you save a signature in your preferred email program. Cover letters, whether submitted through email or traditional mail channels, are always the first impression you provide a potential employer. Make sure that this impression is a good one by following the âbest practicesâ outlined in these links so that your cover letter shines. How to Make Your First $1 Million Through Side Hustles
How to Make Your First $1 Million Through Side Hustles How to Make Your First $1 Million Through Side Hustles Making money with a side hustle has never been easier. Thanks to the internet, people can make money at any time from anywhere. You can certainly make a decent income from moonlighting, but there is a major difference between the average side hustle and the million-dollar side hustle. The key to a million-dollar side hustle lies in shifting your mindset about making money. Here are a few tips to help you adopt that mindset - and make your million: 1. Saving Is Just as Important as Making We all know that making money is essential to financial well-being, but many people focus too much on making money and not enough on saving money. Saving money isnt fun in the short term, but its long-term value cannot be overstated. If you want to become a millionaire through your side hustles, you have to save and invest wisely. When it comes to saving, the first thing you need to do is track your spending to identify opportunities to cut back. For most people, cutting back on big-ticket items is the quickest way to make a big impact. Consider selling your car and driving something cheaper or moving into a smaller home or apartment. Once youve reduced your major expenses, start chipping away at smaller monthly bills like your television subscriptions, eating out at restaurants, and your cellphone plan. Aim to save enough to have an emergency fund. After that, you can start investing. Prioritize long-term investments, and you will make a million dollars faster than you think. 2. Be Your Own Boss Most people start side-hustling by taking on additional projects for other people. If your side hustle does not transition into something more, though, youll have a tough time making $1 million. The best side hustles are scalable and earn money passively. Driving for Uber or Lyft can be great ways to earn extra cash, but while doing so, you should be building passive income streams. Look for side hustles that can transition from working for someone to having someone work for you. Tim Ferriss talks about this a lot in The 4-Hour Workweek. I recommend reading it for a more in-depth exploration of passive income. 3. Focus on Helping 1 Million People, Not Making $1 Million Obsessing over money is not the best way to make money. Investing in your network or the people you know may not make you any money directly, but it can help you make $1 million down the road. Instead of thinking about how you are going to make your next dollar, think about how you can help someone. At the end of the day, people pay for things that will help them. If you can come up with an idea that can meet this demand, you are on your way to making your first million. If your product or service costs $1,000, you will have to sell it to 1,000 people to generate $1 million. If your product costs $5, you need 200,000 people to buy it to make a million. If your product costs $1 million, you better be a hell of a salesperson. 4. Fiercely Protect Your Time Operating a million-dollar side hustle takes a great deal of time. If you want to be successful, you need to use every available hour of each day wisely. Try implementing time-blocking. Time-block everything, from when you are going to check your emails to when you are going to walk the dog. Learn when and how to say no to things that do not help you reach your goals. Furthermore, take the time to invest in doing absolutely nothing every once in a while. It will help you avoid burnout. 5. Prioritize High-ROI Investments Identifying which activities are worth your time starts with making a list of every side hustle idea youve ever had. Then, prioritize them according to which ones make you the most money for the smallest amount of effort. Also, consider if the hustle can scale. You do not want to spend all of your time and money on something with a limited ROI, as this is a surefire way to fall short of $1 million. Focus on the 20 percent of the work that makes 80 percent of the money. 6. Acquire the Necessary Skills After completing your gig list, it should be pretty easy to see which gigs are worth your time. Focus on those gigs and take the time to learn every single aspect of the business. Take advantage of free online resources to become an expert in your chosen field(s). YouTube is a great place to start, as are website like edX and Coursera, which allow you to take college-level classes online. Get a library card and read every book you can get your hands on. One huge caveat here: Some people get caught up in the learning phase. Dont let learning stop you from actually doing. Sometimes, the best way to learn is by trial and error. Bear in mind that knowledge does not make money. Applying knowledge in the real world makes money. 7. Execute Better Than Anyone Else If you want to side-hustle your way to $1 million, you have to be better than every other person in your industry. To be realistic about this, evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. If you are not the smartest, make sure you work the hardest. According to Angela Duckworth, success does not come from talent. It comes from a mixture of talent and perseverance. Duckworth explores this concept at length in her best-seller Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. Its worth the read. Grit is living life like a marathon, not a sprint, Duckworth writes. This is how you should approach your goals. Getting to where you want to be will take time, effort, and careful planning, but it is all worth it in the end. The road to riches is not easy. The journey will be littered with failures. However, utilizing grit and prioritizing your time will make the journey a lot easier. Brett Helling is the head of Ridester.

Inspiring Minds How to Boost Your Job Search Creativity
Inspiring Minds How to Boost Your Job Search Creativity Inspiring Minds How to Boost Your Job Search Creativity A clear desk. Laser-like focus. Setting a strict schedule. It seems that performing these activities would ensure job search success, cutting down the time that it would take you to job hunt and get hired. But as it turns out, some good olâ fashioned daydreaming can be an even bigger ace in your job search arsenal than you might have thought. In the Fast Company story, âSeven Surprising Facts About Creativity, According to Science,â it seems that thereâs no denying the benefits of relaxation as a means to creativity and overall success. Weâve culled some of the ideas from the article to help boost your job search creativity, and hopefully help you get hired a whole lot faster. How to Boost Your Job Search Creativity 1. Take a shower. Sure, you might be feeling down in the dumps when you donât have a job. But bathing is a tried-and-true way to automatically feel better about yourself and also clear your mind. In the book Wired to Create: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Creative Mind, it points out that 72 percent of people studied in a survey claimed that they had greater insight when they were taking a shower. Maybe itâs the steam, the warm water, or the womb-like environment that it creates, but bathing ranks high with helping people score new ideas. 2. Go solo. When youâre looking for a remote job (or even when you have one), isolation can be a big factor and an even bigger detriment to your mood. But as it turns out, being alone can also help spark new ideas. Although thereâs something to be said for the spark of ideas that can be created in a group-like setting, for some more imaginative thinking, itâs often best to go it alone. So take a walk when you feel stuck on what to say in your cover letter, and see how refreshed, inspired, and ready to write you are when you return to your desk. 3. Try something new. Itâs easy to get into a job searching rut. After all, youâre scanning job listings, looking at the same resume and cover letter every day, and clicking to send your job application. Rinse and repeat. So try something different with your job search today. Maybe you shake up your routine by breaking up the day with some exercise (also a good way to reconnect with your creative side), or go to a networking event either in person or online. When you try something new, your brain releases dopamine, which helps with learning and motivation. Go outside your comfort zone and try something new. 4. Trust your gut. We long for the day when we donât have to write about job search scams, but sadly, they are still out there. And there are a lot of them actually; itâs estimated that for every one real work-at-home job, thereâs upward of nearly 100 job scams. Thatâs why itâs critical as you conduct your job search to trust your instincts. That job that seems too good to be true- you know, the one with the super high salary for not a lot of work, or the shifty hiring manager who wants to hire you on the spot without a formal interview, or the one who asks for your personal info (Social Security number, bank account info, address, and so on)- well, those are all signs of a job scam. So if thereâs even a teensy, tiny bit of doubt that is lurking in your mind before you submit your job application, listen to it. Youâre probably right. 5. Do daydream. Letâs face it: It can be boring to sit at your desk for hours at a time cranking out job applications in the hopes of catching a potential bossâ eye. And it can be downright depressing, too. Thatâs why you can (and should) take a Walter Mitty moment and daydream. It can be anything from watching adorable puppy videos, to taking a (very limited) Facebook break, to imagining yourself saying yes to a bonafide (and pretty fabulous) job offer. By daydreaming, you not only give your brain a much-needed break, but also you boost creative thinking, self-awareness, and positive long-term planning. Who knows- dabbling in daydreaming just might lead you to an epiphany that encourages a career change, or helps you better structure your job search. 6. Listen to others- and then ignore them. Some of the most well-known facts in todayâs modern world were once thought of as heresy. So if you have an idea for what you want your next job to be, you might be met with some resistance, particularly if itâs not a popular notion among your friends and family. Remember, only you know whatâs best for you, and if your entire family has office-bound jobs and youâre the only one looking for a full-time remote position, you might be told that itâs absolutely inconceivable that youâll be able to work from home- and get paid for it. But keep on keeping on, job seekers. You should listen to their advice, but if in your heart of hearts you know that working remotely is right for you, donât let anyone dissuade you from pursuing your professional (and personal) career goals. Itâs great to infuse your job search with creative moments. They will help inspire you to try something new, give you the mental breaks that you need in order to relax, and also add momentum to keep your job search going strong. What they do: Headquartered in Framingham, MA, TJX Companies owns and operates the clothing and home decor department stores TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods Associates. As of this writing, the Huffington Post reports that the president of TJX Companies is still paying Puerto Rico employees whose stores are closed or destroyed, almost six weeks later. We think thatâs one majorly cool step ahead for the humanitarian side of providing employment and taking care of your employees. Theyâre chasing after that goal by building software solutions and solving hard problems for their customers in social media, marketing, and analytics. Why theyâre cool: Sprout Socialâs motto, âOpen communication creates progress,â says it all. Plus, they won Glassdoorâs Employeesâ Choice Award for the Best Places to Work 2018. Facebook believes that every connection made takes us one step closer to a better world where ideas and knowledge can be shared freely. What employees say: âIâve been at Facebook for about a year and a half and it is the first company iâve worked for thatâs truly walked the walk in terms of standing by its mission and values. The people that I work with care deeply about their users and about the company as a whole and Facebook cares deeply and invests in those employees as well. The problems are large-scale and complex, but the people working to solve them are the best of the best.â - Current IOS Recruiter What they do: The Freelancerâs Union is an advocacy group that promotes independent workers through education, advocacy, and services. Its free membership gives freelancers, consultants, and independent contractors access to resources related to union discounts, client non-payment, health insurance, and taxes. Why theyâre cool: This year, The Freelancerâs Union partnered with UpWork to update its annual âFreelancing in Americaâ report , providing important data around the employment opportunities available as a freelancer or independent contractor. Considering the fact that more than a third of Americans and almost half of working Millennials freelance, itâs no surprise that the study predicts that the majority of the US workforce will be freelancers by 2027. We think itâs pretty cool that The Freelancers Union is studying, organizing, and advancing this important source of career options for the next generation. What employees say: The Freelancerâs Union has a 3.7 overall rating among its employees. As you might suspect from a freelance advocacy group, employees love the flexibility of remote work, as well as the passion and energy that can be found among coworkers. What they do: Based out of Palo Alto, CA, Houzz connects furniture, appliances, and home accessories with the people who want to buy them â" without leaving the site to finish the purchase. Why theyâre cool: Named to CNBCâs Disruptor 50 List and LinkedInâs Top Startup Companies, Houzz fits right in with the startup workplace vibe. LinkedIn reports that Houzzâs common areas are inspired by homey themes like âBritish Tea Roomâ and âItalian Closet.â Also, part of the onboarding training includes a pair of Houzz slippers so you can feel at home and stay comfortable while you work. This continues the pleasant trend of making the workplace more comfortable and flexible â" âworking from home at work,â if you will â" and we think thatâs really cool. What Its Like to Work Year-Round in a Vacation Destination
What Itâs Like to Work Year-Round in a Vacation Destination What Itâs Like to Work Year-Round in a Vacation Destination During my summers in college I lived and worked on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Only an hour or two from Boston, the population of Cape Cod swells by more than 250 percent in the tourist-heavy months of July and August. This influx of vacationers requires a host of seasonal employees to support them and keep them entertained. In the summer months jobs abound for people who can work in hotels, restaurants, boat tour operations, amusement parks, summer camps, golf courses, etc. Even the National Park Service and local law enforcement departments have to increase staffing levels to support the throngs of people lining up to get a choice spot at the beach parking lot. For me it was an easy fit for a summer job. I worked six to seven days a week at a sandwich shop and waited tables at a restaurant. The first summer I lived with a local family (childhood friends from New Hampshire who had moved there) and met a local boy whom I dated throughout college. Through him and his friends, I got a birdâs eye view into the year-round economy. After college I stayed one fall through November and experienced the stark contrast of the Cape with and with out tourists. Here are some things I learned that may help if youâre considering relocating to a place you love to vacation. Steady Year-Round Employment Is Scarce and Limited The best way to ensure year-round employment is to have a career in a profession such as healthcare, education, law or banking. Summers on Cape Cod can feel like a relaxed big city because there are so many people from New York and Boston vacationing there. But big-city or tech jobs such as software engineering, management consulting, social media marketing, etc., are all but non-existent. If you want to work in those types of fields, you will end up commuting 60 miles or more to the Boston area. Consider whether spending hours a day commuting is worth access to beaches that youâll be too tired to enjoy. To find the jobs that are there, networking with locals is key. It is truly small-town living where who you know is more important than your amazing resume. Many of these jobs are taken by people who grew up on the Cape, went away to college and came back to start their families. The more you can get to know them, the better chance youâll have of finding professional employment. Be a Jack-of-All-Trades Many Cape Codders have a summer career and a winter career. A summer fishing tour boat guide might do housing construction in the winter. An elementary school teacher might run a refreshment stand in the summer. Other jobs that have seasonal fluctuations are UPS drivers and holiday retail. Seasonal flexibility also means that you can expect to work longer hours in the summer and also make more money, which of course needs to be saved to get you through the winter months when you might work shorter hours, if any at all. Networking is key for these jobs as well. Someoneâs husband or wife or friend or relative will be favored for a job over an outsider. If youâre working at a seasonal job already, and want to stay on, get to know the locals, particularly business owners. They are the ones who will keep you employed and pass your name along when they hear of something. Making substantial personal connections and letting them know all the things you can do will keep you top of mind when it comes time to switch gears. Entertainment Options Decrease in the Off-Season Some of the most popular restaurants and watering holes are shuttered after Labor Day. If you love a place like the Wellfleet Beachcomber or the Brewster Woodshed, donât expect to go there in December. Many buildings that house popular summer businesses arent even insulated. Summer activities such as building sandcastles on a crowded beach might be replaced with strolling on a deserted beach. You may also find that you have to drive farther to get more variety. A small-town area like Brewster and Orleans can keep you entertained in July and August, but come fall youâll find yourself wanting to venture toward Hyannis or even Boston just to experience some variety. Retirees are Everywhere Many seasonal vacation destinations have a reputation for attracting retirees for year-round living. Cape Cod is one of them. If you work in health services, this could be reason enough to move there. But if you are seeking the vibrant youth culture you find at a place like The Woodshed, go to where those people live, not where they vacation. You are Free to Enjoy The Land Without all the People A beautiful place is beautiful in every season. You wonât be diving into waves at Nauset Beach in January, but you can still enjoy watching the waves crashing on the shores while wearing a parka. The ponds might be frozen and the beaches covered with snow, but youâll find a new appreciation for those special spots when theyâre not thronged with tourists. Most year-round residents love it for exactly those reasons and breathe a sigh of relief come September. Thatâs what makes it worth it. Even with all my local connections I didnt choose to stay on Cape Cod past that one November. I knew I needed to live in a big city to do what I loved. But many of my friends are still there and are thriving as a part of the community of locals.

Non-disclosure Agreement FAQ - Ireland
Non-disclosure Agreement FAQ - Ireland Confidentiality/Non-disclosure Agreement FAQ - Ireland General QuestionsWhat are the differences between the various confidentiality agreements? The Potential Purchase/Transaction deals with the situation where one party is going to sell a business, part of a business, or assets and needs to disclose the financial books or other confidential information to potential purchasers. The Invention agreement protects an inventor where investors or some other person require access to confidential information in order to evaluate the invention. The Employee/Contractor agreement protects an Employer where a contractor or employee has access to confidential information belonging to the Employer. The Other Purpose agreement deals with any other general situation where one party will be providing confidential information and wants to be protected. Why have a written contract?Written confidentiality agreements provide documentation or evidence of the receiving party's understanding of the confidential nature of the information received. The receiving party's obligation to maintain the confidentiality of the confidential information is clearly expressed. A written contract allows the disclosing party to define crucial terms and more effectively control the way the information is used. Having the contract in writing is proof of what was agreed to and may help prevent misunderstandings later on. How long should I make the duties and obligations of confidentiality last following the termination of the agreement? It is important to stipulate a term long enough to protect the interests of the disclosing party, while not unnecessarily burdening the receiving party. The length of time you should use depends on the nature of the confidential information and the nature of your particular circumstances. Remember that if you select a time period that is too long or too restrictive, a court may find the clause unenforceable. What is the purpose of the non-competition clause?A non-compete clause restricts the receiving party from starting a competing company or disclosing confidential information to competitors. Its important to note that it cannot prevent people from working for competitors. How long should I prevent the party receiving the information from competing? It is important to prevent competition long enough to protect the interests of the disclosing party, while not unnecessarily burdening the receiving party. The length of time you should use depends on the nature of the confidential information and the nature of your particular circumstances. Remember that if you select a time period that is too long or too restrictive, a court may find the clause unenforceable. What is the purpose of the non-solicitation clause? This clause prevents the receiving party from recruiting any of your employees to work for them. In other words, this restriction prevents the receiving party from raiding your work force. How long should I make the non-solicitation clause last for?It is important to prevent solicitation of employees for a term long enough to protect the interests of the disclosing party, while not unnecessarily burdening the receiving party. In addition, you cannot unfairly restrict the employment of individual employees. The length of time you should use depends on the nature of the confidential information and the nature of your particular circumstances. Remember that if you select a time period that is too long or too restrictive, a court may find the clause unenforceable. What is an injunction? An injunction is a court order preventing a party from actually disclosing the confidential information. This remedy is often more beneficial than monetary damages because money alone may not fully offset the damage done by an unauthorised disclosure. It also avoids the difficulty of trying to measure all the damage caused by an unauthorised disclosure. What is meant by reasonable steps necessary to retrieve lost or improperly disclosed information? This means that the receiving party will take action that would be considered normal by a reasonable person in the same circumstances. What additional clauses could I add? While the Confidentiality Agreement that Law Depot provides is very comprehensive and provides sound protection, this option is available to allow you to further tailor the contract to your specific needs. What information would be classified as confidential?Confidential information would include all information that is provided by the Seller to the Purchaser that is not common knowledge or already in the public domain. This will NOT include the following: Information that is already known in the industry; Information that becomes publicly known through no fault of the Purchaser; Information rightfully in the possession of the Purchaser before being received from the Seller; Information created by the Purchaser through the Purchaser's own independent research. Information obtained in this way must be acquired without the direct or indirect use of confidential information already received from the Seller. This may include information developed from publicly available or industry sources; Information obtained from a third party pertaining to the Seller's business where the third party may rightfully disclose the information. This may include information rightfully disclosed by a government agency or industry journal. Potential Purchase TransactionHow should I describe the name of the item to be purchased? When describing the name of the item to be purchased, it is important to indicate the specific purpose that the Purchaser can use the confidential information for. If you want the confidential information to be used for a specific purpose, use specific wording. If you want to allow flexibility in the purpose that the confidential information is used for, then use more general wording. Describe the item with enough detail so as to clearly identify the item without including any of the confidential information regarding that item. When can consent be withheld? If the transaction that is the subject of this agreement is not completed, but confidential information was shared in the process, you may withhold your consent that would otherwise allow the Purchaser to be involved in a business that is in direct competition with your business. This wording prevents the Purchaser from using the confidential information to your disadvantage. InventionWhy is there no space to describe the invention in the contract? The description of the invention is intentionally not mentioned in the contract to ensure that the contract is signed and the obligation of confidentiality is imposed on the Evaluator before any information about the invention is disclosed. Sometimes the mere description of the invention would allow someone else to steal your idea. Employee/Independent ContractorHow should I describe the position/responsibility of the Employee? This description is important because it defines the purpose for which the Employee will be able to use the confidential information. If you want the confidential information used for a specific purpose use specific wording. If you want to allow flexibility in the purpose that the confidential information is used for use more general wording. What is a bona-fide independent party?A bona-fide independent party is a party that is not associated or affiliated with the Employee nor does the employee own or control that party in any way. What does not unreasonably withhold consent mean in the non-competition clause? This wording means that the Employer will not withhold its consent for an unjust, irrational or unreasonable reason. When can consent be reasonably withheld?Ultimately, this is a question that is decided by the courts. You would need to have a good reason for withholding your consent. This may include situations where you have a legitimate proprietary interest and by giving consent your interest would be compromised. Other PurposeHow should I describe the purpose for entering into the Confidentiality Agreement? You should include a description of why you are disclosing the confidential information to the Recipient without disclosing details of the confidential information itself. This description is important because it defines the purpose for which the Recipient can use the confidential information. If the transaction contemplated by the agreement is not completed, but confidential information was shared in the process, you may be able to reasonably withhold your consent and prevent the Recipient from being involved in a business that is in direct competition with your business. This wording prevents the Recipient from using the confidential information to your disadvantage. After the Confidentiality Agreement is signedWhat else should I consider in protecting my proprietary information?A Confidentiality Agreement by itself may not be enough if you are careless with your proprietary information. Other actions you should consider that will help a court conclude that you are diligent in protecting your proprietary information include: Confidential documents should be kept in a secure location with limited access. Staff and work associates of the receiving party that have access to your confidential information should also sign confidentiality agreements.
